UK relies on ’virtual’ water from drought-prone countries, says report

IWRM-net presented at Qualitative Reasoning (QR) workshop


Stephen Midgley from SNIFFER and IWRM-net attended a week long workshop on QR modelling and wetlands. Following on from the event held in Gland (Nov 09) The Central Laboratory for General Ecology in Sofia, Bulgaria hosted a series of presentations and introduction to QR modelling. IWRM-net has set up the European Water Community to improve its interaction with stakeholders and allow external researchers and water managers to comments on research needs and get in touch with other interested people. It will replace our former community section. By using specifically designed software we will benefit from the new tools being made available for interactive websites. The discussion centered around the idea that integrated water research still remains an exception rather than the rule. Valuing ecosystem services


How can we put a value on all the benefits of land and ecosystem services? It’s a problem that government and researchers struggle with every day. The future for IWRM-Net?


With three years now passed for the project and the results of the external mid-term review absorbed by the partners the project is starting to consider its final 18 months. We have produced 2 research calls with an estimated total of over 6 million Euros. The partners have also shared their experiences in research management processes and learnt that working together at the European level is not easy and takes time. World Water Forum, Istanbul

IWRM-net presence at the 5th Forum in Turkey


IWRM-net partners were involved in the organisation a thematic event at the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul. Within Theme 6 Education, Knowledge and Capacity Development, session 6.1.1. Knowledge for all, all for knowledge addressed the mechanisms and tools which improve sharing and use of knowledge. Snowing in Stockholm

The third research need workshop has now been completed and some useful contacts were brought together. We received a lot of good feedback and some interesting things to take forward, including questions on the scope and scale of IWRM. THis brought some interesting challenges for IWRM-Net to consider. Two down and two to go

Sibiu Research need workshop with EURO-INBO


The Sibiu workshop has now been completed and we are getting a better picture of the needs of Europe in the field if Integrated Water Resource Management. The day was very productive and with a small focused group we managed to cover a lot of issues. Linking with EURO-INBO meant that we could present the work on research needs almost immediatly to a large group of peers and get feedback. World Water Week

Discussing needs with delegates from around the world


Members of IWRM-net alongside SPLASH, CIRCLE, CRUE and SNOWMAN ran a side event at World Water Week in Stockholm that attracted over 50 delegates. There was a wide variety of delegates from those already involved in European Research to those just curious to learn more but the discussions were valuable to all the era-nets in broadening our perspectives in research needs for water. There were six tables all with a different question to answer based in what are the priority research needs. (...)

WP4-Meeting in Vienna


To learn out of the 1st Joint Call and to enhance the progress of WP4 a workshop is planned in Vienna on the 31st of July 2008. Participants from Hungary, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Austria are invited to the Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environment Agency).

One to One research exchange


At the recent meeting in Vienna, the networking associated with being part of IWRM-Net has led to a positive outcome for Environment Agency’s Stuart Kirk. Stuart was very pleased to receive the results of a Dutch funded research project from Netherlands colleague Jolanda Oosting and this research has helped Stuart answer some questions on which he had been considering commissioning research himself.
