The development of an integrated model to predict abiotic habitat conditions and biota of rivers for application in climate change research and water management. (Germany, Portugal, France). The coupled models were used to assess the effect of climate change on discharge and in turn on river morphology and stream biota compared to the impact of other anthropogenic pressures like water quality, hydromorphological alterations, and altered re-colonization potential. The project focused on macroinvertebrates and fish and for the first time included dispersal models of aquatic taxa to predict temporal scales of restoration success and population recovery. http://www.impact.igb-berlin.de/
Water CAP and TRADE 13th June 2014
Structural water deficits and drought risk are expected to become more frequent, putting at stake the current mechanisms of water management and allocation. The establishment of water markets or systems of tradable abstraction quotas could represent a possible alternative. The use of a “cap and trade” approach could simultaneously guarantee environmental protection as required by the Water Framework directive and enhance flexibility in allocation to maximize water use utility and possibly reducing conflicts.

The ClimAware project aimed to analyse the impacts on freshwater resources at continental and regional scales, and to identify efficient adaptation strategies to improve water management for various socio-economic sectors.

The recent EU Water Policy Review, the Blueprint to Safeguard Europe’s Waters (EC, 2012) has attested little progress towards achieving Europe’s environmental objectives, including drought preparedness. The Water2Adapt project has analysed drought events in three representative river basins in Spain (Ebro), Italy (Po) and Germany (Weser). All three river basins are evidenced as being water stressed, despite the arguably abundant water resources available. The analysis focussed on the economic losses, social hardship and rural/urban resilience to water scarcity and drought.

ESAWADI. Implementing ecosystem services approach at the local level: Expectations, barriers and insights. 28 March
Five research organisations (Asconit Consultants, CREDOC, seeconsult, Intersus and IMAR) and their local partners in France, Germany and Portugal set up the ESAWADI project. It was launched on 1st July 2010 and lasted 2.5 years. The project partners developed a common framework of analysis of ecosystem services and based on this, refined the topics of the case studies in each country. The main academic innovation was not to further develop ecosystem services valuation methodologies in itself, but to tailor it to fit WFD requirements and subsequently assess the potential “added value” of ESA methodology in the WFD

ICARUS. IWRM for Climate Change Adaptation in Rural Social Ecosystems in Southern Europe. 5 April 2013
The ICARUS partners aimed at increasing efficient water use in agriculture by analysing biophysical, socio-economic and institutional dimensions of sustainable water management and identifying innovative adaptation strategies, practices and tools. The selected case studies in Italy, Portugal and Spain investigated methods for more efficient irrigated productions systems which could be disseminated in other Mediterranean countries. This webinar will discuss the various reports produced; on climatic forcing variables and downscaled climate change scenarios; on land use scenarios and socio-economic scenarios and constraints for irrigation management. The period considered in these reports extends from 2015 to 2030.
